Safety first!
Type in “baby” in Google News and you’ll find a variety of articles with headlines such as “Unattended baby apparently drowns in overflowing tub” (Houston Chronicle), Baby left in hot SUV; mom charged (Detroit Free Press) and “Shaken baby syndrome may have killed toddler” (WBBH).
What’s the common denominator in all of these sad incidents? Carelessness. We may think nothing of little things like running out of the bathroom to check on the stew while baby is splashing away in the tub, or leaving the car engine running for 15 minutes with kids in the backseat while we do some quick grocerying. Or we may lose our temper and shake the baby a little to stop its incessant screams.
It’s easy to forget that a moment is all that’s needed for a mishap to occur. Unfortunately, the only remedy for it is for parents to be on guard all the time, in control all the time. As long as our children are not old enough to make their own sound decisions, it’s our responsibility to do it for them - always bearing in mind that an instant of folly leads to a lifetime of regret.
