Inside Motherhood

Mom’s sick.

by Jean Angus on May 20th, 2006

I’ve come down with a nasty flu bug that has me coughing up bloody phlegm and constantly stanching a runny nose. It isn’t pleasant, to say the least. What makes it worse is the fact that our family physician’s hands are tied when it comes to prescribing me medicine to cure my symptoms. He can only give me Piriton, which as a sedating antihistamine renders me practically useless during the day, and amoxycillin. Nothing more than that.

It can be quite confusing trying to find information online about drugs that are safe for pregnant and/or breastfeeding moms, but here are two resources I think are particularly useful:

SafeFetus.com - Has a fairly comprehensive alphabetised drug directory with information on fetal and breastfeeding indications and risks.

kellymom.com - A comprehensive infosite with a section dedicated solely to medications in breastfeeding, broken down according to specific medications, with an additional section on herbs, supplements and natural treatments.

Hope you find these resources useful. Excuse me while I fight off this bug. Normal updates should resume when I’m feeling better.
