Flaunt or hide.
I’ve always struggled with announcing my pregnancies, not because I’m ashamed of being pregnant, but because I never know how to deal with the resulting flurry of well-wishes - some sincere, some put-on. For this reason, I usually don’t let on that I’m pregnant unless the people in question are good friends or family members, or are in a need-to-know position.
Right now I’m working freelance in an office for a few days. The people there know I’m pregnant, but the person who got me the position has no clue. And it’s hard to tell that I’m pregnant - I’m nearly 18 weeks along but I don’t look pregnant at all, and most people who don’t know the truth will just assume I’ve got extra padding around my midriff.
I wonder how many women out there take pride in telling the world that they’re up the spout. Or are most people shy about it, like me?

I was a bit more on the shy side. I’m curious about where the expression “up the spout” came from! :D I hadn’t heard that before. :)

I don’t like to announce to the whole world until past 1st Trimester (depending on how well I can conceal and disguise). Not even to parents. They are the worst lot! The next thing you know, every distant relatives, neighbours, and their pets will know about it.

Deb, “up the spout” is an idiom with British roots, used when something goes wrong or not according to plan. It’s similar to saying something’s “gone tits up”. I don’t know when it took on a pregnant meaning, though!
