Frying your baby’s brain?
Scientists at Yale have found that exposing pregnant mice to ultrasound for over 30 minutes may affect foetal brain development. They’re not sure yet if the same thing will happen with human foetuses, though:
It is possible that 30 minutes of ultrasound has a much bigger impact on a mouse’s developing brain than a human’s. In order to see what the effect may be on humans we would need to carry out similar tests on animals that are more similar to humans, the researchers said.
I think the only time an ultrasound scan would last that long would be during the detailed foetal assessment scan carried out at around 20 weeks of pregnancy where the technician takes measurements of just about every part of the baby to make sure everything’s OK.
Nevertheless, common sense tells us to use ultrasound in pregnancy for medical reasons, not entertainment. Unless of course, you’re Tom Cruise and you’re not right in the head to begin with. Better get Suri checked, TomKat.
