Getting moving
There are so many things that get harder to do once you have kids. Things you took for granted like peeing in solitude and eating an entire meal while it was still hot. Another thing I’ve noticed is exercise.
I’m not a huge exercise fiend anyway, I’m actually kind of physically lazy. But that’s why it’s even more frustrating, because if I’m going to do it, I just want to get it done and then be over it, I don’t want to start exercising and have to stop halfway through to get someone a cup of juice or break up a fight.
There are obvious solutions, none of which work for me:
- Exercise in the morning before they get up. This would only work if I don’t mind getting up with the sun. Which I do mind. And my husband would not appreciate being woken up by a child who is shrieking because mom is gone when he has a fairly exhausting job and needs his sleep.
- Exercise in the evening after they go to sleep. I don’t know. I suppose it could work in theory but by the time I get them to bed I’m pretty worn out and more inclined to collapse in a heap. Also, the evening is when I do any of the work I still have left to do. Besides, don’t the experts say it’s not a good idea to exercise that close to bed time?
- Join a gym with childcare. Excellent and potentially fun for the girls but my budget is not able to stretch enough for a gym membership.
I do get some exercise just by being a mom of course. I walk to the park with them, or around the neighborhood. Plus, we live on the 4th floor with no elevator so I get exercise from those. Unfortunately, when your kids are the age of mine, walking is still pretty slow so I know I’m not getting an aerobic workout at all.
How do you get your exercise in? I’d love to hear how you fit it in if you have similar issues as my three points above. Am I destined to just trying to do my old exercise videos with one hand on the pause button?

I don’t know if your third floor neighbors would appreciate it, but maybe get your kids involved with you - get a few jump ropes or a workout video that you all like. My kids used to love it when i’d pop in my Believercise videos!
