Why ped days suck

Today, my daughter’s school board had a ped day. It was kind of silly since they’ve only been in school for what, three weeks, plus they had Labour Day in there, AND Kindergarten was only every second day for the first two weeks. On top of that, Canadian Thanksgiving in just a couple of weeks away, so there’s another four day weekend right there, what with Friday AND Monday off. But whatever. It was her birthday yesterday so I joked that the school board shut down all the schools as a birthday present.

However, here are some reasons why ped days might suck, especially if you’re a parent:

1. Although everyone can theoretically sleep in, your body clock is used to the school schedule and you’ll wake up at 5 am. You’ll go back to sleep half an hour later, but…
2. Although everyone can theoretically sleep in, your child’s body clock is used to the school schedule and she’ll wake up at 6:15. Never mind that on a school day you have to literally haul her out of bed at 6:30
3. Your child will be used to organized activities and will expect songs, stories, snacks, and nature walks before you’ve even finished your coffee. Treehouse TV will not be an acceptable substitute to someone who is now keen on higher learning.
4. Your work that you do from home on your laptop while the toddler naps? Ain’t gonna happen.
5. The mindless surfing you do while your toddler naps? Ain’t gonna happen.
6. The semi-control that you maintain over the state of your home when you only have one kid home most of the day? Yeah, forget it, two kids at home - twice as much mess.
7. Your child who has been reluctant to go to school most mornings will start crying at bedtime because she’s sad that she won’t get to play with her new BestFriendForever at school. Reminders that she’ll see her on Monday are irrelevant. Also, this will not make Monday morning any easier.
8. You will spend the entire Friday convinced that it’s Saturday since your child is at home and even ten thousand self-corrections will not make it stick.
