Leftover Halloween Candy ideas

by Sherry on November 5th, 2007

I found a site with a great idea on what to do with leftover candy from Halloween. Once your kids have had a bit, they’ll probably be perfectly willing to keep asking - and eating! - whatever is still lying around. Not only is it not a good idea to let them eat it all if they got a huge haul, it’s also really annoying to be asked for candy 598433955 times per day (not that I’d know).

If you’re like our family, the parents can take care of it by eating most of it themselves. Ha! But realistically, we probably all end up with more candy than we possibly need, so here are some suggestions I found on what to do:

  • Keep the leftovers, particularly anything that won’t melt like chocolate will, and use it to stuff a pinata for the next birthday party (neat!)
  • Donate it to a food bank. It’s not healthy but they can use it for children in need on special occasions.
  • “Recycle” it by making a new treat with the old ones. The site lists a Milky Way Bar Cake as a suggestion, and you can probably substitute other candy bars.

Some other things I thought of:

  • Use certain candies like swedish berries or M&Ms as toppings for cupcakes for special occasions.
  • Not everyone likes the idea of rewards for potty learning (with my oldest, we used stickers instead), but if you do, a few coveted candies could work well.
  • Make a little gift basket for grandparents
  • If you have some Glosette chocolate covered raisins or peanuts, mix them with chopped fruit for a homemade trail mix
What do you do to deal with all the leftover candy? Honestly, we dole out a few pieces here and there, eat the rest of the good stuff ourselves, and then throw out the icky ones no one wants.
