If you have the patience to follow along with this video (I kind of want to try it), you could try making this paper toy. While the process isn’t exactly simple, the end result is.

That’s the kind of thing that could keep your kid busy while standing in line at the bank or while sitting in a doctor’s waiting room. Actually, if you anticipate a long wait at the doctor, you could maybe even hold your child’s interest while making it on the spot, assuming you carry travel scissors (I have a Swiss Army knife, I always have scissors) and think to bring some scotch tape. Instead of a ruler, you could just use a debit card.
