Craft Wednesday - Bird Feeder

by Sherry on March 19th, 2008

Spring is just around the corner (supposedly - right now I can’t even see out my sliding glass doors with all the snow pushed up against them) so here’s a really simple craft that you can do with your kids, even the toddlers. I’ve made them before and they’re easy, fun, and work - a bird feeder.

All you need is a pine cone for each child, some yarn or ribbon, some peanut butter (or a substitute if you’re allergic to peanuts, anything sticky will work), and a bag of bird seed.

Take your pine cones and attach a fairly long piece of yarn to the top, so that you can hang it later. Using plastic knives for safety, coat the pine cone well with peanut butter. Now the fun part, and the easiest for younger kids - spread out some newspaper and pour out some bird seed. Take each pine cone and roll it through the seeds over and over until the pine cone is pretty well covered with them.

Head outside and hang them somewhere that will be visible from your windows. Trees with low branches are great. We live in an apartment building so we just tied them to our balcony railing.

Depending on the time of day, you may not see any birds until the next day. One tip I can offer up is to take some of the leftover seeds and spread them on the ground below the feeders to attract extra attention. Once they come in closer to get to the food on the ground, they’ll definitely notice the feeders.

From your window, you can watch the birds eat. You can try watching from outside too, depending on how much space you have. Both my kids love doing this.
