Reading turns cute

by Sherry on April 8th, 2008

I haven’t been able to read to my oldest lately. Not because I don’t have time or won’t make time. It’s because ever since she learned to read and she realized she’s capable of reading, she doesn’t want me to do it. She’ll read to herself now and if she hits a word she doesn’t know and can’t sound out, she’ll ask me. But perish the thought that *I* read when she’s perfectly capable on her own. I see a lot of independence battles in the teen years!

It’s gotten very cute lately though. Now, in the evening when I’m getting beds turned down and cups of water, both the girls pile into a bed together and my big girl lies there and reads to her little sister.

Reading in bed

What’s even more interesting about this is that my little one has all the patience in the world to listen quietly as her big sister slowly reads. Meanwhile, it’s a miracle if I can read her an entire book because she would rather just ask me what things in the pictures are, and then flip the page.

It’s become my favorite part of the evening, to come out of the bathroom after putting toothbrushes away, and finding them curled up with a book together.

What a beautiful picture! That’s so sweet that the little one is so patient with the big one, too.

Oh my gosh - how cute. I love that your younger daughter thinks it’s cool to listen to her big sister read.

You must want to just stand at the edge of the bed and smile (until you’re seen, of course! Then they probably stop! :)
