Playdate Jitters

by Sherry on April 11th, 2008

With real Spring weather underway (I’m just going to ignore the fact that they’re calling for wet snow for the next two days, lalala, I can’t hear you!), that can only mean that Summer is just around the corner and that means lots of time hitting up the local park, the big nature park, ice cream shops, and all those other fun Summer pastimes.

And it just reminds me that I have no idea how to organize playdates. I really don’t. I am lousy at the Mommy-dating game. On weekends, it’s never a big deal because we have a group of friends who all have kids around the same age so we get together for BBQ evenings, swim afternoons, and the kids play themselves into exhaustion.

However, I’m the only mom who works from home so I’m unable to get together with the others during weekday afternoons. I’m hoping that with my youngest one being a little older this year that both my kids can keep each other entertained a bit more than last year when we go to the park. I have to pick up a couple of sets of pails and shovels and other sand toys, and then they can go to town in the sand at the park. It would be nice though, if we could set up some playdates.

I just don’t know how. My friendships have all evolved naturally by being introduced to someone through someone else. I’ve never had to aggressively pursue a friendship and although of course I don’t have to be BFF with someone I meet at the park, as long as our kids play together, it would obviously be nice if we got along too. I just don’t know how to say, “hey want to meet up again tomorrow at the other park? Here’s my number, call me!”

Have you made friends from strangers? I’d love to hear tips!

Can totally relate to your playdate story. Met some lovely ladies online and have met up with them. Ironically, they met many of their new friends in parks. Kept bumping into each other. I’ve always found the park thing difficult too finding the right words to say but these new friends found 2 other friends this way when they were new to the area…… am rethinking the park. Maybe I should go to their parks!
