The cheerleader video

by Sherry on April 17th, 2008

I don’t think I even need to link to the stories about the cheerleaders who beat up a girl so badly she ended up with a concussion and a damaged eye. It’s not necessary because it’s been all over the Internet for about two weeks now. You know the story right?

While I am outraged by the pack mentality, especially since I saw it growing up and it’s disturbing, there’s something else that has been bothering me. The video itself. They filmed the whole attack with the intentions of putting it up on social network sites, things like Facebook. Obviously the motive was not only to beat the holy living crap out of the girl but also to humiliate her as much as possible by making sure even kids who were not there could “enjoy” what had happened.

Word leaked out and not only did they arrest the girls (and two boys acting as lookouts, I believe), they seized the video. Great!

And so ever since then, it has been played on every North American news show and has been all over the Internet.

Isn’t that what they wanted?

Yes, granted, they didn’t expect to be arrested (which proves how stupid they were because they were clearly visible, did they not think they would be recognized?), but it’s still out there. And they blanked out the victim’s face, but it’s still out there even if they don’t show her face or release her name. Not only did she live it, she can see herself being punched and kicked and thrown around and the people who would have enjoyed seeing her beaten up can still see it too.

I know media is media and they need to grab the big stories and use everything they can, but I really don’t think news sources should be using video footage like this. They should have covered the story and left the video to be used by the courts as evidence.

What do you think?

they should be treated as adults. if they are old enough to talk like that, kidnap a girl, trap her in a house, beat her for 30 minutes AFTER she was unconcious! then they can go to jail too.
they obviously wanted to seem tough by putting the video on youtube so they’re going to look real tough and STUPID when they get sent to jail for 26 years.
people need to stop blaming youtube and myspace for the cause of this. no one caused it but the girls.
the 16 year old decided to be dumb and message a girl and caused herself to be attacked.
not that the moronic cheerleaders took it well. if someone hates you, you avoid them. not beat the shit out of them.
    life doesnt work that way.
    sorry.
so i think they should rot in jail.
    period.
