Car seat scare

by Sherry on May 3rd, 2008

Today my father-in-law inadvertently nearly endangered my oldest daughter, but luckily we caught it in time. He came to pick her up to run some errands and then he was going to take her over to my in-laws’ house for supper. When they were leaving, I peeked out the window so I could wave good-bye if she looked up. We had given him the booster seat from our car.

As I looked out, I saw him putting the seat into the front seat of his car. I immediately shouted to my husband who ran out on our balcony and stopped him. He said it was too dangerous for our five year old daughter and so she ended up in the back seat - where she belongs.

I don’t blame him at all, he comes from an era where almost no one even used car seats. My husband came home from the hospital as a newborn, lying in his mother’s lap in the front seat. He just didn’t know.

But that’s why it’s important to make sure that everyone who ever drives your kids anywhere - grandparents, family friends, babysitters, etc. - is aware that children under age 12 are the safest in the back seat. A child in a booster seat hit by an airbag can face serious injuries if not deaths. Infants in rear-facing seats are in even greater danger of dying because their heads are closer to the point where the airbag deploys.

Remember that an accident need not be severe for an airbag to deploy. You could be in an accident that is incredibly minor and which should not hurt anyone, but if the airbag strikes your young child, the result can be devastating.

Please read here for more information. But the bottom line? Keep kids buckled safely in their appropriate seats in the BACK seat as long as possible.
