Inside Motherhood

Obsessed with beauty

by Sherry on June 11th, 2008

I found this story today (careful, the embedded video starts up automatically) and it really disturbs me. To sum it up, it’s about a nine-year old girl who is incredibly obsessed with her appearance and her body. She never leaves home without full make-up - eye shadow, foundation, mascara, lipstick, the works - and she insists on high-end name brand clothing. She constantly worries about the way she looks.

The mother also said that her daughter had weighed 59 pounds for quite some time but at her last doctor appointment she discovered she now weighs 67 pounds and she completely flipped out over her weight, crying and becoming very upset.

The kicker - although the mom is concerned, she has entered her daughter in beauty pageants for years. She has spend her entire childhood having makeup plastered on her face and being dolled up. She’s been taught to look her “best” at all times (and I used that loosely because I don’t think little girls look good in makeup unless they’re playing dress-up involving old lipstick smeared all over their mouths). Is it really a shock that she’s now fixated on how she looks?

What do you think? Is the pageant life the probably reason for her beauty obsession? Have you ever entered your daughters in pageants? If so, how do you balance between the pageant stage and looking like a normal kid the rest of the time to avoid these issues?

It makes me so sad to see a nine year old so concerned about her looks.
