Summer exhaustion

by Sherry on August 1st, 2008

Swimming poolI had really forgotten how tiring swimming is. I used to swim at my cousin’s pool in the summer as a kid, and it was always the best kind of tired. I’d lie in bed at night, with my hair still damp and smelling like chlorine, and then I would just kind of stare off in the distance, too tired to even think of anything. Then I’d drift off to sleep, and those post-swimming nights were always the best sleeps.

Today we took the kids to the park near our home and we went swimming in the public pool. It was the first time we’d ever gone and it was a really nice pool. We’ll definitely be going back. My oldest finally got the confidence to start doing the doggy paddle (with a lifejacket, she still hasn’t taken lessons) and swam all over the entire pool for two non-stop hours. Meanwhile, my youngest splashed around, not too willing to be far from our arms.

Both the kids are wiped out. As for me, having done a nice little backstroke back and forth several times, and then just general splashing and swimming around, I am feeling very tired myself. They’re finishing up snacks but yawning furiously, and I know they’ll be having that same kind of sleep I did as a kid.

Too bad mothers have so much to do after kids go to bed, because I sure wish I could join them.

I love that tired feeling as well. Usually I only swim once or twice a summer, but this summer I’ve been trying to get in more for the exercise. I am remembering that feeling & really enjoying it!

My kids don’t seem to get it. We’ve had a pool for 3 or 4 summers now & it just doesn’t seem like they get it.

I had forgotten just how much exercise it really is. Those few laps I did nearly killed me!
