Giveaway: Back to School With Microsoft Student Encarta
Can you solve this? If f(x) = 3(2)x, find f(0)
Yeah, me neither. In fact, my brain just cramped up. It’s been, well, quite a
long time since I was in high school!
So what are we supposed to do when our kids come to us for homework help and we either don’t remember it or never did it in the first place?
If you’re me you have them go ask dad (or the neighbor), otherwise check out Microsoft’s Student with Encarta Premium.
The software package includes:
- Learning Essentials (report templates, bibliographies, presentation outlines)
- Microsoft Math (3-D graphing capabilities, step-by-step homework helpers, a graphing calculator)
- Encarta Premium (over 30,000 trusted Web links, a 3-D atlas with multiple maps, search tools)
- Foreign Language help (Microsoft Word writing capabilities in multiple languages)
- Book Summaries (better than Cliff’s Notes!)
- Encarta for Kids (a fun, colorful version of Encarta Premium designed for the younger set)
It retails for $49.95 but guess what? You’ve got a chance to win a package for yourself! Read on:

My favorite subject should be music (I’m an opera singer - or was). But my favorite subject was English. Ms. Benatti (I wonder where she is now??) Ms. Benatti was a beautiful blonde Italian woman who married a Muslim if I recall correctly. She would tell us stories about walking through the streets of foreign lands completely covered in orange cloth (her favorite color) up from head to toe, with just her eyes lined with kohl colored liner, peering out. She had beautiful hazel eyes so I always imagined how pretty she would have looked.
I was just moving from NYC to the suburbs (HA!) of Long Island. She made me feel very welcome playing to my love of books and all things creative to get me to feel comfortable. Granted all 10th graders feel like outsiders, but me even more so as my mother just remarried and had twins around the same time we moved from my childhood apartment to a house in the burbs!
Our first project was to create a newspaper of our family. As I said, my mother just remarried and had twins as well so this was a great way of “fitting us all together on a page” so to speak. I created horoscopes, stories on my brothers and new twin brothers, an advice column about how to deal with calling a new father figure “Daddy” and when to. I included a crossword puzzle of all of our names and even my very own comics. I loved that project and remember getting so hyped up for it I worked on it overnight after a burst of creative ideas. I got an A+. I still have the newspaper with folded edges and yellowed with age, but I am saving it for my kids when they get a little older. We also have a blended family and I think it would help them to see what my frame of mind was, and how important each member of the family was for me growing up. You know, just showing them that I know what they could be going through.
So yes, I love 10th grade English.

History was always my favorite all through grade school to graduation. However it was not my husband’s, he actually failed a history class twice in college. Fortunately the 3rd time was the charm because he needed it to graduate. I would really love to win this for my grand children. It would be wonderful to give them something productive and educational to do on the computer. Instead of games, chatting and IM’ing.
