Inside Motherhood

Soccer wind-down

by Sherry on August 13th, 2008

Tonight is my daughter’s second-to-last soccer game. Her final game will be on Monday. There’s a tournament game where they get their awards, and there’s also a possibility of a special indoor tournament sometime in late September (that was a lot of fun), but as far as regular season games go, we’re just about done.

I have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, I’m glad it’s wrapping up. It has to, really, because school starts in a few weeks and having evening games on school nights is just bad (I know because the beginning of the season was like that). Also, it will be nice to no longer have to rush to get supper done in time to hurry out for a 6:30 pm game twice a week.

At the same time, I’m sorry for it because she’s doing so much better this year. Last year she wasn’t very good at it, being only four and not really having the confidence to run with the bigger kids, some of whom were already six. This year she’s one of the bigger kids (both age-wise and height-wise!) so she’s more brave about getting in after the ball, she’s scored several goals, and she has more fun.

It will be okay though. I’m not jumping into a new activity with her right away after soccer wraps up because I want her to be able to concentrate on getting back into the routine of school again without interference from other things. However, once she’s settled I’m hoping to get her into swimming lessons since she finally got brave enough to swim - with a life jacket - at the public pool. I don’t want to wait too long because I took swimming lessons when I was 12 and that was really too late and I never became a strong swimmer.

She’s also expressed an interest in dance classes and I’d love to put her in Brownies, but I don’t want to overwhelm her with too much at once.

How many activities do your kids do during the school year?
