Computers for kids

by Sherry on September 18th, 2008

My husband is an IT sort of guy and we have approximately 54232909734 spare computer bits and pieces (give or take a few hundred) in his studio. Seriously, he could probably build at least three full systems just by going through the cupboard in there.

Both our girls love to play computer games. My oldest enjoys more complicated games geared for the 5-10 year range, but even my two-year-old is shockingly adept at playing some of the games on NickJr.com (she’s really good at the Wow Wow Wubbzy games and the Ni Hao Kai Lan puddle jumping game).

My husband is going to put together a basic computer for them and we’ll set it up so that it’s protected and can only go to approved sites for kids. My oldest is officially taking computer classes in grade one now so it will be good for her too, to have a system she can use to search for things that interest her. Meanwhile, it will give them their own computer to play their favorite games (with time limits, naturally, I’m not going to let them get all slack-jawed and buggy-eyed in front of a computer like me!).

Of course, we’re also going to do some sort of re-arranging so that their computer is out in the living room - not in their bedroom!

It made me wonder, though, whether this is common or whether we’re a little weird for putting together a computer for a couple of kids aged almost-six and almost-three. Do your kids have their very own computer? How old are they and where is the computer?

My kids did not get their own computer until age 14. Good for you for setting limits, and putting the computer in the living room.

Lisa - I didn’t really expect to do it so soon either, but my husband and I both need to use our computers a lot (especially me, since I work from home) so this way we can all do our stuff at the same time. :)
